HS football: Powell recognized as best defensive player in PCAL Gabilan division

Aptos High senior defensive lineman Josh Powell led like a captain from the start of the year. His leadership and play on the field landed him this year’s Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan division’s most valuable player on defense.

His offensive production also earned him a spot to the first team on offense.

The Mariners battled through another hard-fought season in the PCAL Gabilan division, placing fourth behind league champ Salinas High.

Mariners’ senior offensive lineman Christian Reyes was named to the first team on offense, while junior linebacker Nicco Riccabona and senior defensive lineman Dre Gomez were named to the first team on defense.

Aptos senior kicker Danny Dahel was named to the Richard Chamberlin All-Sportsmanship Team.

Salinas senior quarterback Carl Richardson was named the PCAL Gabilan division’s most valuable player, while Palma High senior running back Anthony Villegas was named the league’s most valuable player on offense.
