Hit and run suspect facing manslaughter charges

A Watsonville man is facing felony vehicular manslaughter charges after a woman he allegedly struck with his vehicle on June 5 died from her injuries.

Alejandro Rocha Fernandez, 27, has been charged with causing injury while driving drunk and hit and run causing death. He is being held in Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Diana Crotty, 55, died Monday night, Santa Cruz Police Lt. Warren Barry said.

Santa Cruz Police responded to a call of a possible hit and run crash in the area of Cedar and Maple streets on June 5 about 7:15 p.m.

Officers found Crotty in the roadway pinned underneath a vehicle. Santa Cruz Firefighters provided medical aid to the victim, as police looked for the suspect, who fled the scene.

Witnesses described the suspect, who was seen jumping fences and running north toward Cathcart Street.

Crotty was taken to a nearby trauma center.

Several Santa Cruz Police Detectives responded to assist with the investigation. Two men were later detained, one of whom was Fernandez.
