Two Safeway employees at Soquel location test positive for Covid-19

CAPITOLA—Two employees who work at the Safeway grocery store on 41st Avenue in Capitola have tested positive for Covid-19, company spokeswoman Wendy Gutshall said.

One employee has not worked since May 23, and the second since May 30, she said.

“That store has been through multiple cycles of our enhanced cleaning, sanitizing and/or disinfecting process since that day,” Gutshall wrote in an email. “In an abundance of caution, we conducted a thorough cleaning, sanitizing and/or disinfecting throughout the store.”

Gutshall said that the store will remain open, and employees will follow an “enhanced cleaning, sanitizing and/or disinfecting process in every department.”

“We have reaffirmed with all associates that they need to wash hands, disinfect check stands and to practice social distancing,” she said. “We have also reminded them that if they develop a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness, such as a cough or shortness of breath, stay home and call their healthcare provider right away.”

Gutshall said that, when company officials learned about the cases, they initiated a “close contact investigation.”

“Following that investigation, we may recommend that additional members of the team self-quarantine,” she said.

The employees are eligible for up to 14 days quarantine pay.
